We shape our buildings, and afterwards our buildings shape us.

Products and Services: DQI for Schools

THE DQI FOR SCHOOLS WAS LAUNCHED IN DECEMBER 2005 AND IS VERY SIMILAR TO THE GENERIC DQI TOOL BUT WITH GREATER EMPHASIS ON AREAS WHICH ARE SPECIFIC TO THE NEEDS OF SCHOOLS SUCH AS THE USES OF SPACES, THE BUILDINGS RELATIONSHIP TO THE COMMUNITY AND THE BUILDINGS GROUNDS. THE DQI FOR SCHOOLS IS APPLIED IN THE SAME WAY AS THE DQI TOOL AND DQI FACILITATORS, WHO HAVE EXPERIENCE IN THE SCHOOLS SECTOR, CAN FACILITATE USE OF THE TOOL.

WHAT IT MEASURES:

The DQI for Schools (Design Quality Indicator for Schools) is a framework for assessing the quality of school design, as well as, an online tool to quantify the results throughout the build, rebuild or renovation cycles.

It is used to assist teachers, parents, school principals, superintendents, pupils, people from the community, and building professionals to achieve design excellence in new or refurbished school buildings and grounds.

The DQI for Schools helps key stakeholders form a consensus the priorities and ambitions for the school itself, before a single line has been drawn, then allows the project quantitatively benchmarked along the life of the project.

WHEN IT IS USED:

At several points during the project. For new build schools, we encourage the DQI to be used as a standardized forum to hold critical conversations about “What do we want to achieve with this building?” These conversations should happen as early as possible in the process.

For renovation and additions, the DQI for Schools should be the first step for any renovation project to determine a baseline by which your team will be able to gauge improvement and degrees of success. It will be the time zero assessment of how well or how poorly the current design of the building is faring. The tool will identify and quantify the most glaring deficiencies and better help the procurement team allocate resources for the upcoming work.

During the design phase, the DQI for Schools can be used by the same stakeholder group to assess how well the plans for building work meet the objectives that were set out at the initial stage.

Then once the building is completed and the school is in use, the DQI for Schools tool can be used to asses how well it functions in relation to the ambitions of those that procured it; Does the building do what we want as well as we want?

The DQI for Schools has now been used on nearly 150 new and refurbished school buildings. These have mainly been secondary schools that are being upgraded and refurbished.
